Police Scotland increased the number of officers who can train their local policing colleagues in Distress Brief Intervention (DBI) at training event in Glenrothes on Wednesday, 19 February, 2025.
Training for DBI trainers was delivered to 70 police officers in the company of partner organisations including the DBI Central Team, NHS 24, University of Glasgow, Scottish Police Federation and third sector providers for DBI referrals from police.
DBI enables trained police officers, in the areas where the DBI police pathway is live, to refer those experiencing distress to the right agency which can provide the support they need, allowing officers to redirect to their core policing duties.
Currently around 1,700 officers are now DBI trained and the DBI service has helped 80,000 individuals from across Scotland since it launched seven and a half years ago.
Police Scotland’s continued commitment to local training forms an important part of work alongside the Scottish Government on the multi-agency partnership approach to mental health incidents – https://www.gov.scot/publications/multi-agency-partnership-approach-distress-framework-collaboration/
